Proposed Algonquin Provincial Park Management Plan Amendment

5.1 - New Water Units, and Relocations, Replacements, or Expansions of Existing Water Units

New water units or the relocation, replacement or expansion of existing water units may be permitted where new, relocated, replaced or expanded water units comply with the following limits, conditions and standards:

  • The water unit(s) will not:
    • exceed a combined (total) footprint (i.e., for existing, new, relocated, replaced or expanded water units) of 20 square metres, with the exception described below for on-water boathouses;
    • impede navigation;
    • be a new boathouse, or relocation, replacement or expansion of an existing boathouse;
    • be a new permanent water unit (e.g., crib dock or similar structure), or expansion or replacement of an existing permanent water unit;
    • be a water trampoline (or similar structure);
    • be a thermal lake loop or similar structure; or
    • be a water bubbler / de-icer (or similar structure).
  • The water unit(s) will be:
    • in close proximity to the cottage lot. For clarity, this means located entirely in front of the cottage lot (i.e., between the straight-line projection of the cottage lot boundary (over the water) and over the lakebed within 20 metres of the water’s edge), unless not technically feasible;
    • connected to shore within the existing approved disturbed shoreline area (when applicable);
    • constructed and maintained subject to the limits, terms and conditions of sections 2.1 and 2.2  (General Guidelines) above.

In addition;

  • swim platforms (rafts) will be removed during the winter months (e.g., October – April);
  • boathouses may not be modified to include kitchen, washroom or sleeping facilities; and
  • new and replacement water units and the expanded portion of existing water units will be:
    • constructed entirely using untreated materials (e.g., composite materials, natural cedar/hemlock, torrefied wood); the use of pressure treated lumber will not be authorized, and materials must not be treated with paint or stain; and
    • of a neutral earth tone colour (i.e., brown, green, grey) that blends in with the surrounding landscape.

Exception for Boathouses: The footprint of an existing on-water boathouse that has been authorized to continue beyond 2017 is not included in the calculation of the total combined footprint for water units. That is, these existing boathouses may continue, in addition to the maximum allowable 20 square metres for other water units, but are included in the calculation of shoreline disturbance.
