Mississagi Provincial Park

Backcountry Camping

1. The Experience:

Mississagi offers spectacular scenery thanks to the geology of the area which forms a series of hills, scenic ridges overlooking mature and old growth maple and pine forests, and valleys with sparkling blue lakes. The park is ideal for both backcountry hikers and paddlers.

Mississagi has over 40 km of trails to explore. Most of the trails in the system are connected and can be hiked as individual day hikes or together for a backcountry trip of several days. All 5 of the backcountry sites can be accessed on the hiking trail network.

Three of the backcountry campsites can be accessed by canoe, two on Semiwite Lake and one on Helenbar Lake. These sites offer an opportunity to paddle into the backcountry and access the trail network for day hikes, as well as a basecamp to enjoy the area’s excellent fishing opportunities.

Mississagi’s backcountry is accessed from the main campground. All the campsites are marked and come equipped with a fire pit and box privy.

2. Reservations and Interior Camping Permits

Lake or zone-specific reservations are available online or by phone up to five months in advance of your arrival date. When making a reservation, you will select a pre-defined lake or zone to camp in for each night of your trip. Within your lake or zone, campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations are recommended to secure a campsite.

Interior camping permits are required for backcountry camping at Mississagi Provincial Park. Permits are picked up at the main gate upon arrival during business hours.

3. Trip Planning

Maps are available for purchase online.

Canoe rentals are available at the park. Please contact the park office to inquire about availability.

Please be respectful of the natural environment and other visitors. Practice leave-no-trace camping, camp only on designated campsites, and be aware of your surrounding neighbours, ecology, and wildlife. We appreciate your efforts to maintain this pristine environment.

Car Camping

The 60 campsites in this wooded campground on the north shore of Semiwite Lake are secluded and private. Most are pull-through trailer sites and each campsite is provided with a fire pit and a picnic table. Some sites are on the water (walk-in sites) and many have a footpath leading to the lake.
Seasonal Leasing: There are a number of campsites at Mississagi that are designated for seasonal leasing. These sites are available from the time the park opens (May 18) until it closes on the Labour Day weekend. If you are planning to spend a large portion of your summer in one location, seasonal leasing could be the best option for you. The cost is less than what you would pay if you were renting by the night, you can stay in the park past the 23-day limit, and you won’t have to set up and take down your equipment more than once!

To discuss a seasonal lease prior to the park opening, contact the Park Clerk at Chutes Provincial Park (705-865-2021). Once the park is open you can speak to the Park Warden about how to arrange a seasonal campsite lease.

This program is operated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Group Camping

There is one group campsite at Mississagi. This site is adjacent to the campground and will accommodate 15-20 tents, 4-5 medium sized trailers, or a combination of both. There are toilets and water taps nearby and the site is a five minute walk from the camper’s beach. Picnic tables are located in a roofed shelter.

Reservations can be made online or by phone.

Walk-In Camping

Four campsites are walk-in (tent) sites and are located on the shore of Semiwite Lake near the day use area. The distance from car to campsite at these sites is less than 20 metres.
