On Saturday July 17th Killarney Provincial Park unveiled its new observatory, recognizing 25 years of astronomy in the park. Inside the observatory is a 10 inch Mead LX5 telescope that was donated to the park by astronomer Bruce Waters. In addition to donating the telescope, Mr. Waters donated 25 years of Starry Starry Nights programs and text to an information book that will be published by the Friends of Killarney in the future.
Mr. Waters was presented with an award from RASC (the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada) and Ontario Parks, commemorating his years of outstanding contributions to Killarney, this award being the first of its kind. Following the formalities and the ribbon cutting ceremony, Mr. Waters honored those in attendance with a slideshow and touch of the night sky. The observatory deck was donated by the Friends of Killarney Park.
The next time you’re visiting Killarney, stop by the observatory and discover the wonders of the night!
