Marten River Hosts 21st Annual Lumberjack Days

Marten River Provincial Park is celebrating its 21st Annual Lumberjack Days on the weekend of July 16 in conjunction with Canada Parks Day.

The park’s replica 19th-century Logging Camp is the setting for Lumberjack Days with its array of logging artifacts and period cookery, blacksmith’s shop, stable, bunkhouse, hay barn, and camp office.

Singing, step-dancing, children’s activities and some great musical entertainment complement the event’s core lumberjack activities – crosscut sawing, bow sawing, blacksmithing and nail driving.

A logger’s lunch of baked beans will be served at the Logging Camp’s cookery on Saturday, along with “today style” foods such as burgers and hot dogs. For those with a sweet tooth there are plenty of pastries to choose from at the bake table.

It requires a squadron of volunteers to make Lumberjack Days possible. Many of them are longtime park campers and many are Marten River area residents who give of their time and talents to help make the weekend a success. Volunteers are responsible for the delicious pancake breakfast held on the Sunday morning, which is a great way to help cap off the celebrations.
