Family Day and Valentine’s Day in Ontario Parks

Looking for a natural way to celebrate Family Day? These Family Day events at Algonquin Provincial Park and The Pinery Provincial Park are just two of several Family Day celebrations taking place at Ontario Parks in 2013. More listings are on the Ontario Parks’ Calendar of Events. One of Canada’s quirkiest Valentine events has to be Bronte Creek Provincial Park’s adults-only hike. Based on rave reviews last year, it’s back February 9, 2013. Check BronteCreek.org for details.

Winter in the Wild Festival runs February 16, 2013. The staff and Friends of Algonquin Provincial Park bundle a bunch of fabulously fun winter activities into one spectacular day. Mew Lake Campground has yurt rentals and there are family resorts just outside the park for those who want to make it an overnight. This year’s festival begins bright and early with an 8:30am guided winter bird walk at Algonquin’s Spruce Bog Trail. A ton of activities follow throughout the day including a behind-the-scenes tour of the park’s mysterious Collections Room in the Algonquin Visitor Centre, a guided snowshoe hike (limited # of snowshoes available), BBQ, campfire, skating, winter camping demonstrations, even a winter photography tip session. The day concludes with a fireside wolf chat followed by a short night hike and wolf howl. For details click here.

An Owl Prowl is planned at The Pinery Provincial Park, on Saturday February 16th, 2013 to celebrate Family Day Weekend. This could be the year to see a Snowy Owl. A Snowy Owl “irruption” has been reported in southern Ontario this winter. That’s when large numbers of Snowy Owls fly further south than normal. If you can’t make that weekend, check the Friends of the Pinery web site for other naturalist-led activities which occur year-round. “Ask the Naturalist” introduces you to the sights and sounds of winter and it is offered most winter weekends. A new Deluxe Cabin is available for rent along with heated winter yurts. Close to 40km of cross-country ski trails are kept groomed and great snowshoeing can be enjoyed on packed walking trails in off-trail areas of the park. Snowshoe and ski rentals are available.
