campfire Traditional Recipes

S'mores

Traditional

Serves 1

Ingredients:

1 marshmallow
1 square, milk chocolate (or 2 if you like lots of chocolate!)
2 graham crackers
1 camp fork

Directions:

Roast marshmallow over fire, turning constantly, until golden brown.
Sandwich marshmallow and chocolate square(s) between graham crackers.
ENJOY, then ask for s'more!

Chef says: Try varying the recipe by using chocolate chip cookies instead of graham crackers, lavender marshmallow with dark chocolate or ice-wine marshmallows with milk chocolate and add a strawberry slice.

History

The first printed S’mores recipe appeared in the 1927 Girl Scout handbook titled, Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts. Folklore tells us the name “S’mores” came about because everyone who tasted one asked for “some more."

The S’more is made of two graham crackers that act as a top and bottom “bun”. In the middle, you’ll find a perfectly toasted marshmallow and a slab of milk chocolate, warmed ever so slightly by the hot marshmallow.

When cooking, embers provide even, slow heat. The result will be creamy in texture and golden brown (medium-rare). Open flames provide intense, quick heat. The result will be crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside.
