Congratulations to our 2015 Ontario Parks Partners Bursary recipients!

The summer student workforce is the life-blood of the Ontario Parks summer operating season. Our provincial parks simply could not operate without these student workers.

On November 20, parks staff, corporate partners and students gathered in Peterborough to award the 2015 Ontario Parks Partners Bursaries.

The event was commemorated with a song from our Singing Superintendent Scott Thomas:

The Ontario Parks Partners Bursary was established in 2000 by several Ontario Parks corporate partners to recognize students who excel in their jobs with Ontario Parks. The $500.00 awards acknowledge the innovation and leadership of young people who work in Ontario’s provincial parks.

2015 bursary student winners
Students received their award from Ontario Parks Director Bruce Bateman and Ministry of Natural Resources Assistant Deputy Minister Tracey Mill.

Our 2015 winners drew praise for their roles as mentors, educators and innovators. Whether they were building ramps to lead raccoons out of the dumpsters, training junior students or sharing park history and heritage with visitors, each student went above and beyond to earn their nomination.

Special congratulations to Athena Mintz, who received the Amber Booth Award

Athena Mintz, winner of Amber Booth Award

This award carries special recognition for bursary recipients whose efforts stand out in the areas of health, safety and wellness. During her fifth season at Killbear Provincial Park, Athena played a major role in integrating a new staff member with Down Syndrome into the workforce.

For example, Athena facilitated her teammate’s development as an integral part of the popular snake talks at the Killbear Visitor Centre, where he handled and presented the park’s fox snake to visitors.

Athena’s efforts ensured that this colleague’s first summer was ultimately a positive and fulfilling experience.

Without the support of the following partners, the bursary program would not be possible

Since 2000, our corporate partners have provided over $250,000 to our students.

Big thanks to our 2015-2016 partners!
