Be PARKsmart this summer

In the heat of summer, a popular past time is… well, anything involving water.  This summer while out on the water, Ontario Parks would like you to remember safety first!

Did you know the PARKsmart Lifejacket Lending Program is available in more than 67 provincial parks?  To ensure the safety of your family, lifejackets may be borrowed for a small refundable deposit.  This program is made possible by the support of these generous sponsors:  Mountain Equipment Co-op, Ontario Power Generation (OPG), BOATsmart, The Canadian Red Cross and The Waterkeeper Swim Guide.

“By partnering with our sponsors, we’re able to provide critical lifesaving equipment to thousands of our visitors every year and do our part to help reduce the number of drowning deaths across the province.  Water activities are part of the fun of visiting Ontario Parks and through this program we’re able to provide a fun and safe experience for our visitors,” says Scott Elliott, Partnership Development Specialist with Ontario Parks.

Why are lifejackets so important?  An individual can drown in the matter of seconds.  It only takes 60 seconds for adults to drown and 20 seconds for children.  Lifejackets are designed to give you and your loved ones time!

The Lifesaving Society of Canada has some great tips on water safety.  Also, make sure you check out our video on water safety.

Curious to see if the parks you are visiting this summer have the PARKsmart Lifejacket Lending Program?  Use our Park Locator tool, and then click PFD under the rentals tab.  The map will then show you all the provincial parks with this program!

Also, if you see this image on your favorite Ontario Parks webpage  – it means the PARKsmart lifejacket lending program is available.

Let’s have a fun and PARKsmart summer!
