This year Killbear is taking a serious look at what famous biologist E.O. Wilson called “the little things that run the world” – insects. Killbear Mini Bug Blitzes, happening weekly throughout the summer, are are one of the many OP125 stewardship projects throughout the province.

Birchbark Canoe Build with Chuck Commanda, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. daily

Chuck Commanda comes from a long line of Algonquin canoe builders. As a young boy, growing up in Kitigan-Zibi, Chuck helped his grandparents make birchbark canoes. Now, years later, Chuck enjoys sharing his knowledge and showcasing his skills to the public. Meet him anytime between 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. daily at the main beach picnic shelter. He will build a birchbark canoe (Wigwas Tchiman) in 14 days, using birch, spruce, ash and cedar materials harvested in the park and surrounding area. The finished canoe will be launched on July 20th!

Free day-use at all Ontario Parks. We are opening our doors to everyone in Ontario; there will be no charge for day-use visitation during the celebration (except our pool).  Bronte Creek Provincial Park is hosting events and activities that encourage people to visit parks and be active. Explore the park, sample our facilities and services or enjoy a fun event in a great natural setting!

The time to strengthen and rediscover our connection to nature is now! Ontario’s provincial parks are home to some of the most inspiring and beautiful landscapes in the country. We want to increase the awareness and uptake of the strong benefits linked to spending time in nature.

Join us as we get outside and enjoy our park through learning and play. All programs are no charge.

OP125 - Ontario Parks is 125 years old.  Learn about the celebrations taking place throughout the province.

Special events and programs

Learn to Disc Golf or Tips from the Pro.                                                                                         10am – 2pm. Parking lot F

Great for beginners of any age!  Pick up a disc, and learn the basic movements/rules, then head out on the course for a round.

Skilled golfers will be on hand to show you the ropes and join for a couple holes or more.

Look for the event tent at the entrance to the course and will have loaner discs available.  There will be club fundraiser discs if anyone wishes to purchase anything above and beyond what we can supply. 

Canoe basics                                                                                                           In the Pool.  11:30am - 3:30pm 

First come first serve.  Registration at pool.  Swim test and PFD required.  We loan out PFD's.

This is your opportunity to learn the basics of canoeing!  30min - 45min family lessons.  No experience needed.  We are hoping this activity will attract visitors who have never had the opportunity to get into a canoe.

This year, 2018, marks the 125th anniversary of Ontario Parks. July 20 is HPHP day as well as OP125 Celebration Day.  Algonquin was founded in 1893 and Ontario Parks is celebrating with a number of anniversary based events and themed programs including art heritage. Art heritage in Ontario- Canada and the growth of the provincial park system are closely intertwined.  Show your creative talents during this hour of art discovery.

Evening run with intro the tips before you set off.  There will be 3 trail running groups (different paces).  Runners will have a chance to win a Summer Vehicle Permit.

On Saturday, join us for various competitions of lumberjack skills, visit the “Winter Camp” horse-logging camp and museum with its working blacksmith shop. The Wailers provided the soundtrack to our award-winning film “The Winter Camp”, set in Marten River. With expert guests on-hand, join him at the Rideau Comfort Station anytime between 8:30pm and 10:00pm where he’ll go through the basics before checking out the light traps set up on site. He’ll also have a couple of bat detectors on hand to pick up the calls of these majestic nocturnal insectivores – who knows, we may even see bats coming in to feast on the moths... The fun begins on Friday night with Haunted Tales from the Camboose Shanty! On Saturday afternoon, join us at the Visitor Centre where a Park Naturalist will guide you through a collection of animal skeletons. Mew Lake Campground will feature pumpkin carving, campsite decorating and costume contests with awards given for many different categories!  Everyone is invited to participate in trick-or-treating among the campsites on Saturday night, and later, for a howling good time at the nearby Old Airfield with a wolf howl. Join birdwatchers for this incredible day of winter birding! Please contact the Visitor Centre to obtain more information by calling 519-243-8574.  This event requires being able to tolerate cold conditions for prolonged periods as surveying takes place outdoors beginning before dawn for owls and continues until late afternoon.  If snowy conditions prevail, hiking in snow or using snow-shoes may be required.  If you are interested in participating, please contact the Visitor Centre early to learn more about the day, to share your birding experience level and to get a better understanding of how you can assist with this Citizen Science Program!
