Natural Features

Le Pate is a 250-hectare hexagonal section on the western side of Pie Island in Lake Superior. On Pie Island, greywackes and a layer of shale underlie a colossal circular mesa with caprock some 90 metres thick. Of volcanic origin, the mesa consists of dark, coarse, durable rock that helps protect the underlying sedimentary rock from erosion.
